Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about helmets & helmet fit.
  • Take a soft fabric measuring tape and wrap it horizontally around the widest part of your head—about 1 inch ($2.5\text{ cm}$) above your eyebrows and just above your ears, crossing the bump at the back of your skull. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Take the measurement in centimeters three times to ensure accuracy. If you land between centimeters, round up to the next full size.

  • Stand in front of a mirror or have someone look down at the top of your head from above:

    • Oval / Long Oval: Your head is distinctly longer front-to-back than it is wide side-to-side. (Look at brands like Samshield or LeMieux).
    • Medium Oval: The most common shape—a slight oval that isn't excessively narrow or wide. (Look at KEP Italia or Evoke).
    • Round / Round-Medium: Your head width side-to-side is almost equal to its length front-to-back. (Look at KASK, Tipperary, or Freejump).
  • Premium brands like Samshield, KEP, KASK, and Evoke use a multi-shell sizing framework. Instead of manufacturing a different helmet for every single centimeter, they make 3 or 4 master outer shells (Small, Medium, Large). The exact centimeter fit is achieved using interchangeable, snap-in padded liners. For example, a Medium shell might accommodate a 56cm, 57cm, or 58cm liner. This means if your head shape changes or your hair is styled differently, you only have to swap a liner, not buy an entire new helmet.

  • Don't panic—this is exactly why we use modular liner systems. If your new helmet pinches your forehead or feels slightly loose when it arrives, you do not need to ship the entire helmet back. Simply contact our fit team. We will help you diagnose the issue and ship you a thicker or thinner replacement liner to modify the internal shape and lock in your perfect fit, completely hassle-free.

  • MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. Traditional helmets are designed to protect against direct, straight-line impacts. MIPS introduces a low-friction layer inside the helmet that allows the shell to slide $10\text{ to }15\text{ mm}$ in any direction upon impact. This minor movement mimics the brain’s native protective fluid, redirecting and absorbing dangerous rotational (angled) forces that are common during a fall from a horse.

  • Even if you never have a fall, helmet manufacturers and safety organizations recommend replacing your riding helmet every 3 to 5 years. Over time, invisible environmental factors like heat exposure (leaving it in a hot tack trunk or car trunk), sweat acidity, UV rays, and hair products degrade the internal protective EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam layer, causing it to become brittle and lose its impact-absorption capabilities.

  • Yes, absolutely—even if you cannot see any damage. Riding helmets are engineered to be "one-impact systems." The protective EPS foam liner is designed to crush upon impact to protect your brain. Once that foam compresses, it cannot bounce back or absorb a second blow. A helmet that looks pristine on the outside can be completely fractured or useless on the inside. Always replace your helmet immediately following any impact where your head touches the ground.
