When it comes to riding, stirrups do much more than provide a place to put your feet. In the event of a fall, a safety stirrup is designed to help the rider’s foot release from the iron rather than remaining caught.

But not all safety stirrups work the same way. Some release at the top of the stirrup, some open at the bottom, and others use a flexible branch to create an escape route for the rider’s foot. Understanding these different designs can help you choose the right safety stirrup for your riding.

What Makes a Stirrup a Safety Stirrup?

A traditional stirrup is designed to keep the rider’s foot securely in place while riding. A safety stirrup incorporates a mechanism or design feature intended to allow the foot to escape during a fall.

There are several ways manufacturers accomplish this, but most safety designs can be thought of in terms of where the stirrup opens or releases.

Top-Opening Safety Stirrups

Some safety stirrups are designed to release at the top of the stirrup, where the stirrup leather attaches to the iron.

When the release mechanism is activated, the connection between the stirrup leather and the stirrup allows the iron to separate from the leather. This creates a clear path for the rider’s foot to come free.

Tech Stirrups offers safety models that use an internal release mechanism. Depending on the model, the mechanism is designed to release under pressure and then return to its original position after activation.

Top-opening designs can be especially appealing to riders who prefer the look and feel of a more traditional stirrup while still wanting a dedicated safety-release mechanism.

Bottom-Opening Safety Stirrups

Other safety stirrups open at the bottom or side of the stirrup, allowing the rider’s foot to escape through the opening.

Acavallo's Arena Alupro, for example, uses a side-opening safety system. Its outer portion incorporates flexible polymers and a release mechanism that is designed to open when activated while remaining secure during normal riding.

With this type of design, the stirrup itself provides the release point rather than separating from the stirrup leather.

Flexible Single-Branch Designs

Freejump takes a different approach with its recognizable single-branch design.

Instead of having a completely enclosed outer branch, Freejump Soft'Up stirrups have a flexible single-branch construction. In the event of a fall, the branch can flex outward to help the rider's foot escape before returning to its original position.

This gives the rider an open-sided safety design without relying on a conventional top or bottom release mechanism.

Why Does the Release Design Matter?

While all of these designs are intended to help prevent a rider's foot from becoming trapped, the way they accomplish that is different.

A top-opening stirrup releases at the connection between the stirrup and stirrup leather. 

    bottom or side-opening stirrup creates an opening within the stirrup itself.

    A flexible single-branch stirrup uses the movement of the branch to create a path for the foot to escape.

     

    None of these designs should be considered interchangeable. Riders should understand how their particular stirrup is intended to function, how it resets after release, and what maintenance the mechanism requires.

    Safety and Performance

    Safety doesn't have to mean sacrificing the feel or performance you want from your stirrups. Modern safety irons are designed with features that can affect stability, grip, weight, foot position, and shock absorption in addition to their safety mechanisms.

    Tech Stirrups, Acavallo, Samshield, and Freejump each take a different approach, giving riders options depending on their preferences and discipline.

    The right safety stirrup isn't necessarily the one with the most complicated mechanism. It's the one whose design, footbed, release system, and overall feel work for you.

    Choosing the Right Safety Stirrup

    When comparing safety stirrups, consider more than just the appearance. Ask yourself:

    • Where does the stirrup release?
    • How does the release mechanism work?
    • How does the stirrup reset after release?
    • What type of footbed and grip does it offer?
    • Does the design work with your riding discipline?
    • Is the stirrup permitted under the rules of the competitions you enter?

    For riders competing in USEF-sanctioned shows, the last question is especially important. Safety stirrup requirements have changed for 2026, so a stirrup that provides a safety release isn't automatically legal for every competition.

    One Goal, Different Designs

    Tech Stirrups, Acavallo, Samshield, and Freejump may use very different designs, but they share the same basic goal: helping a rider's foot release from the stirrup in the event of a fall.
