Boot Fit Commitment

What happens when your new custom riding boots don't fit? Investing in tall riding boots is a big deal, and at Olsons Tack, we get it. We pour our passion and expertise into every pair, even with our meticulous process, sometimes a fit isn't quite perfect. This doesn't mean all is lost! We're here to guide you through it and ensure you end up with boots that feel made for you.

Our Meticulous Measuring Process

Whether you visit us in person or we guide you through a virtual appointment, our expert team will guide you through the measuring process. Its rare, but it does happen, we hold pride in a small number that encounter fit issues. How do we do it? We follow a strict, multi-step process for every order:

  • Every measurement is rigorously reviewed. We're looking for precision and consistency, no matter how they're taken.
  • We often request re-measurements. Sometimes, a second look makes all the difference in ensuring accuracy.
  • We don't move forward until we are completely satisfied. Your perfect fit is our absolute priority.

Each custom boot is hand-cut to your exact measurements. Keep in mind that different leathers and models can feel distinct. A soft calfskin might feel snug and break in quickly, while a stiffer patent leather may feel firmer initially. We account for these nuances during the fitting process; it's an art we've mastered over years of experience.

But What If They Still Don't Fit?

First – don't panic. If your boots feel snug but do zip up (especially in soft calfskin leathers), they likely just need to be broken in. Custom boots are designed for a close fit. New boots can also feel tighter straight out of the mold, especially after travel. Sometimes it may take a even few minutes to get them zipped. But once warmed up on your legs, the leather will flex, soften, and settle. We understand leather and how it behaves. Nine times out of ten, your boots just need a little time.

Changing Measurements

Sometimes, leg measurements change, even when riders don't think they have. Muscle tone, riding routines, fitness shifts – it all adds up. We've seen it countless times, and we'll still help do our best to find the best solution.

A Note on Weight Loss Medications

We're seeing a rise in significant and rapid body shape changes due to weight loss medications. These changes often dramatically and unpredictably affect leg measurements. If you are using or planning to use weight loss medications, we strongly recommend waiting until your weight has stabilized before taking any measurements. We cannot take responsibility for fit issues caused by weight changes after ordering. Your boots are handmade to the exact specifications provided at the time of cutting. Waiting until your body has settled will always result in a better fit and longer boot life.

FAQ's

What should I do if my boots don't fit?

Contact us immediately: Call or text us at 425-454-9453. We will guide you through the process.

How do weight loss medications affect boot fit?

We've observed a rise in significant and rapid body shape changes due to weight loss medications, which can dramatically and unpredictably affect leg measurements. Waiting until your body has settled will result in a better fit and longer boot life.

My new custom boots feel snug. Do they just need to be broken in?

Often, yes! If your boots feel snug but you can zip them up (especially in soft calfskin leathers), they likely just need to be broken in. Custom boots are designed for a close fit, and new boots can feel tighter initially.

Will my new boots "drop" in height?

Yes, most boots will drop around 1 cm as the ankle softens and the leather settles. Dressage models may drop less due to their reinforced structure.

How long does it take to break in new boots?

Most clients find their boots feel great relatively quickly. Riding is the BEST way to break them in, as walking won't mimic your riding position.

My boots feel too tall and are digging into the back of my knee. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal for new boots. They will feel stiff and may dig in initially, but this will improve as they break in and "drop." If they feel too high, heel risers can sometimes help.

What if I can't get the boots zipped or laced completely?

If you absolutely cannot get the boot zipped or laced all the way, it's likely too small in the calf. Please contact us immediately so we can discuss the fit.

How long will my boots last?

The longevity of your boots depends on your riding frequency and, most importantly, proper care and maintenance. With regular cleaning, polishing, avoiding excessive mud/soaking, and clearing sand from zips.
